A Lovingly Compiled 'Grab and Go' List of Hotels, Restaurants, Art, Sightseeing, and Shopping.

Rome has grand and opulent hotels, like the Eden and Hotel de Russie, which are located near the Spanish Steps and also smaller more intimate boutique hotels near the Piazza Navona and in Trastevere.  Though we love opulent rooms and terraces with views over Rome, ultimately we prefer staying near the Piazza Navona which is more centrally located. The area surrounding the Spanish Steps, with its wide array of international boutiques and the hordes of tourists they attract, has less appeal for us than the smaller local shops and restaurants located in other neighborhoods.

Where to begin to describe the pleasure of eating in Rome?  Everything we love is here – pizza, pasta, fish, meats and vegetable dishes prepared, in the best restaurants, with a wonderful attention to the glories of local produce, fish and meat. There are wonderful meals in every price range even though for the moment, those paying with the dollar will find few bargains.  Thin crusted Roman pizza, pasta matriciana, cacio e pepe and carbonara are among the treasures of Roman cuisine.  We have enjoyed excellent meals at old fashioned and informal trattorias and at newer restaurants offering a more modern and minimalist approach to cooking.

For most people, the challenge of Rome is how to explore this extraordinary city within the time limits of their vacation.  The only comfort is knowing that even if your vacation were to last 5 years, you would only then begin to skim the surface – Rome is a lifetime occupation.  There are layers upon layers of cultural, architectural, political, religious and art history that wait to be uncovered, and if all that weren’t enough, there is also a new and growing contemporary art scene as well as an array of tempting local shops.
