Rome offers so much to do and see, but it’s worth heading to the nearby town of Tivoli for a grand day out. Less than an hour east of Rome, Tivoli is home to two stunning attractions listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana in Italian) is actually not a villa but the architectural ruins of what used to be Emperor Hadrian’s compound almost 2,000 years ago. You can stroll at your leisure around acres of crumbling buildings, statuary and grottos in the fresh pine air. A 10-minute drive away is Villa D’Este, a gorgeous Renaissance villa with a magnificent terraced garden and spectacular manmade waterfalls. For lunch in Tivoli, do not miss Ristorante Sibilla. There’s indoor seating in several handsome dining rooms and plenty of outdoor seating beside the ruins of an ancient Roman temple. The food is traditional Roman cuisine at its best and well worth the trip.
